This universal step-by-step guide applies to most modern Ferrari models including the F430, 458, 488, F8, SF90, FF, F12, Portofino, and Roma. Follow these instructions to safely remove your start/stop button for professional electrical repair, without damaging your steering wheel or airbag components.

⚙️ Tools Required

  • Tamper-proof T30 Torx bit
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tools
  • Microfiber towel (to protect steering wheel surfaces)
  • Protective gloves

🔋 Step 1 – Disconnect the Battery

Start by disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery. Wait at least 10 minutes before working near the airbag to allow all electrical current to dissipate. This step prevents accidental airbag deployment and protects sensitive electrical components.

🪛 Step 2 – Rotate the Steering Wheel

Turn the steering wheel approximately 90º counterclockwise from top dead center. This position provides access to the rear of the steering wheel where the Torx screws are located.

🔩 Step 3 – Remove Rubber Plugs and Torx Screws

Remove the two small rubber plugs from the back of the steering wheel to expose the T30 tamper-proof Torx screws. Using your Torx bit, remove both screws — one on each side of the wheel. These screws secure the airbag and switch module assembly.

💨 Step 4 – Remove the Airbag Module

Carefully pull the airbag module away from the center of the steering wheel. It should release gently once the screws are removed. Do not use excessive force.

🔌 Step 5 – Disconnect Airbag Connectors

On the back of the airbag, you’ll find two electrical connectors. Use a small flathead screwdriver to gently release the locking tabs and unplug both connectors. Set the airbag aside in a safe location with the padded side facing up.

🧰 Step 6 – Remove the Steering Wheel Control Bezel

Gently pry the steering wheel control bezel (the section that houses the start/stop button) away from the steering wheel. Use plastic trim tools to avoid damage. The bezel will pop free from its rubber keepers with light pressure.

🔧 Step 7 – Unplug the Bezel Connectors

At the bottom of the bezel, you’ll find several electrical connectors. Unplug each connector, noting their positions for proper reinstallation. We recommend taking a reference photo before removal to ensure correct orientation later.

📦 Step 8 – Package and Ship the Bezel

Wrap the bezel securely in bubble wrap or foam padding, and place it inside a sturdy box with additional cushioning. Include your order confirmation or contact information.

🔁 Step 9 – Reinstallation After Repair

Once your repaired start/stop button is returned, reinstall all components in reverse order:

  • Reconnect all bezel connectors
  • Press the bezel firmly back into its rubber keepers
  • Reconnect the airbag connectors
  • Reinstall the airbag and Torx screws
  • Do not reconnect the battery until all components are fully reassembled

⚠️ Safety Notes

  • Always disconnect the battery before starting any removal
  • Use the correct T30 tamper-proof Torx to prevent stripping screws
  • Handle the airbag carefully and store face up at all times
  • Do not reconnect the battery until reassembly is complete
